Tuesday 06 May 2008
in Glasgow

“Pass the tray.” I'm sitting here in my living room with John, over all it was a good afternoon, out in the park playing with a Frisbee, eating ice cream and looking at women in bikinis. He passes me the tray and I get started in prepping a joint.
“Did you see all those people this morning?” I nod vague assent and get the skins lined up. “All those people going to work an honest days wage... What's the word for people like that?”
“Peasants?”
“I thought you were a socialist?”
“No. I like the apathy party (Pause to lick the skins.) but they never seem to get their shit together.”
“Oh Ed, you get all the good lines... who'd you steal that one off?”
“I think it may have been you... dunno.” I pick up the grinder and start twisting away.
“Ed?”
“Yes?”
“What happened with Lynne?”
“Long story.”
“Well?”
I pause for a quick think to round up the memories in order. I also use this opportunity to finish rolling the joint and spark it. Your first draw of the night is always the best, you get that slight toffee-apple/pine scent and flavour searing your nostrils and you know that in about ten minutes time you’ll start to glaze over and relax, warm up, chill out, and forget everything other than what seems to be really important, like signing along to the ‘Man who sold the world’.
“Apparently, she didn't get thrown out of the house. Apparently she got angry with them and stormed out.”
“Shit... So what have you done about this?”
“Nothing.” I pass John the joint after taking a last puff myself
“Nothing?”
“Nothing.”
“Dude! So what are you going to do about this?”
“No wait till you hear the whole tale... I found out why she is so upset. Do you remember Sandra?”
“Oh the South African chick that worked in Costas?”
“Uh, yes. But I would not recommend calling her that to her face. Well, seeing that you remember her I can continue... She is coming back to Glasgow, and she has no place to stay.”
“And your folks said no.”
“That's about the long and the short of it.”
“So what are you going to do? I mean how do you plan to proceed?”
I take the joint that is being offered to me, I may as well build up the tension. I take a deep rough draw, hold it in for a few seconds and reply.
“I'm going to do something.”
“What?”
“Something.”
